Mental health is essential to overall wellness. There are a lot of things that can be done to guarantee a person lives a life that is fulfilling and positive. Affirmations, in New Thought and New Age, refers to self-empowerment and positive thinking. Through positive affirmations, it is expected that people will live more rewarding and happier lives.

A more specific definition for these is formatted statements that should be repeated aloud or to oneself. They can also be written down. For this practice to be most effective, messages should be specific, personal, positive and in the present tense.

Generally, people have their own personal statements that they use. These are believed to be more effective. However, while getting started, a person might use very basic and generic messages that are used by many others. These sayings are important because they help create a mental attitude, often one that encourages success in all things.

A negative mind can leave people feeling unhappy and unfulfilled. People who are too pessimistic are more likely to see negative things come to pass in their lives. This is referred to as a self-fulfilling prophecy and applies to bad and good thoughts. Stress, anxiety, negativity, worry and similar emotions can impact the physical being of a person too.

Affirmations that are regularly read or recited can help people stay focused, happy and confident. The messages are similar to the practices of affirmative prayers, positive thinking, creative visualization and personal magnetism. All these things are used for the same purpose. They are also centered around the beliefs of life force or energy, and law of attraction.

What comes of reciting these messages will vary by person. Still, those who are consistent in their statements are most likely to see results. This is not directly tied to a particular religion, although it is practiced in many belief systems. Even when a person is already in a state of peace and happiness, these messages can be beneficial at carrying this mood and vibe, despite unexpected or unsettling events. This can be a beneficial process, especially for those who suffer with anxiety and worry. It is one way to improve emotions, desires and thoughts.

The idea behind this is that the messages being repeated will reach the subconscious mind. In order for this to happen, the statements have to be said over and over again to make an impression. Once it is implanted into the mind, the messages are more likely to come to pass over time. Thoughts and words that people have play a big part in how the mind is programmed.
