A health building program will necessarily include support for the natural cleansing processes of the human body. Our environment is incredibly polluted; our food, our water, our air, our homes, our clothing, and our work environments are laden with toxic substances. Although it is helpful to use aids to detoxification, only premium detox supplements should be taken. So-called 'natural' and 'healthy' products can be harmful or even dangerous if they are adulterated or improperly prepared.

Your body has a natural cleansing cycle. Basically you are designed to wake with the sun, remain active throughout the day, eat when hungry, and go to bed at dark. Activity causes both blood and lymph to circulate freely, carrying metabolic wastes and toxins away for elimination. Ten or twelve hours of sleep, with no food being consumed, gives your natural cleansing processes time to do a thorough job.

Of course, today we tend to get up with an alarm, rush through breakfast if we have it at all, and head for an office where we sit, sit, sit. Then, we eat a big meal at night. Most of us don't get enough exercise, we don't eat dinner very early, and we snack late at night. All of this means that our systems may get more and more toxic throughout our lives. This toxic overload is one of the major causes of 'aging'.

Some cleansing aids are common sense. We need lots of pure water, preferably mineral-rich spring water with no additives or contaminants. We need clean, fiber-rich foods in their whole, natural state. If we can get these organically grown and fresh-picked, we have a better chance of maintaining health.

Supplements, which include vitamins, minerals, herbs, and 'super foods', are helpful to make up for the lack of good food, pure water, and adequate exercise. Some of these have been used for centuries, long before research showed us why they were good for us. Others are relatively new, or have been known only to the indigenous people of the area from which they come.

Cleansing herbs may have a laxative, a diuretic, or a purifying effect. Senna, psyllium, and flaxseed work as laxatives or bulking agents. Parsley, hawthorn, and horsetail are diuretics, as is vitamin C. Dandelion root, red clover, burdock, and yellowdock are blood purifiers. Milk thistle boosts the cleansing power of the liver and protects that organ from the toxins it removes from the bloodstream.

There is a lot of information available about plants, vitamins, minerals, and foods that boost natural cleansing processes. Once you understand how your body works and what help is available, you can choose the substances you want to try. It makes sense to start with the ones most mentioned by reputable health experts.

This is especially important when using a cleansing formula. There are ways to blend herbs and other nutritional substances to come up with a formula that helps the body rid itself of toxins. However, it's not easy to do it properly and safely, so make sure you can trust those who make supplements you use.
