Tea tree oil for thrush is a holistic treatment used successfully by many individuals. Thrush is a yeast (Candida) infection that affects the throat and mouth. The condition is usually not a serious one and can be treated at home in most cases. Some people, however, choose to seek medical attention for the problem.

This oil is also known by its formal name which is melaleuca oil. The tree that produces this essential oil is only found in New South Wales. The melaleuca oil is contained in the leaves of the tree. Persons have learned that this oil is a good remedy for several health problems including fungal infections.

Candida infections are also called yeast infections. Thrush is a yeast infection most commonly found in infants but can be produced in older individuals. In infants, the condition is generally not considered harmful and most often disappears on its own. Older persons, however, may suffer longer bouts and need something to treat the infection and decrease the discomfort it causes.

The melaleuca oil must be mixed in a preparation in order to use it to cure a mouth infections. The oil itself can usually be purchased in a health food store or a shop selling holistic products and supplements. The oil should be used in a mixture of one part oil to twelve parts water in order to create a mouthwash. A patient should use the gargle right before use.

The homemade mouth wash and gargle can be used three times per day. Patients should gargle vigorously for 30 seconds and then expel the liquid. The mixture should NOT be swallowed. Patients can also place two or three drops of the oil onto their toothbrushes and the gently brush the tongue, teeth and gums with this medicine.

The melaleuca oil treatment generally takes a week or less to be effective. Sometimes, however, this gargle is not enough to completely cure the infection. If after a week, there is still discomfort or if a yellowish cream colored coating is still present in the mouth, the individual should seek professional medical attention. A patient should not leave the infection untreated as a worsening and spread of the problem can occur which is more serious than the initial infection.

In conclusion, a solution of tea tree oil for thrush is often a good remedy for the fungal infection. The oil is used with simple tap water to make a gargle that often produces instant soothing of the mouth and throat and begins fighting the fungus. Sometimes, however, this simple solution is not sufficient. Some tough cases of thrush require a visit to a medical professional who can diagnosis and treat the problem more aggressively.
