Dermal fillers have now become part and parcel of cosmetic surgery across many parts of the world. If you were to ask a dentist you would get a different answer, as during their training an intensive knowledge in the musculature of the face is needed as they relate to dentistry procedures.
Prescription and administration of dermal fillers by dentists has now been approved by the California dental board. Dentists have welcomed this decision suggesting that it is well within the scope of dental practice to provide dermal fillers to patients. The board does have some limitations about which conditions a dentist can administer this treatment for, and therapeutic reasons is the exception where permission is granted. Furthermore, proper training is essential before being permitted to inject them.
The guidelines vary between states. Dentists in Georgia are allowed to inject dermal fillers after a 21 hour training course, as dictated by the Georgia Dental Association, and only for dental reasons.
Limitations involved
At this time, it looks like a lot of dental boards in states in America are now allowing dentists to administer dermal filler injections when it is in relation to a therapeutic dental procedure. The injection of dermal fillers for cosmetic reasons or for non-dental related problems is considered unprofessional conduct and may even be illegal. In every state, a dentist must look at the rules that are in place regarding the injection of dermal fillers, and if they are certifiable, to seek out reputable training on the procedures.
