While studying about the teeth, teachers taught that visiting a dentist should be done two times a year. At that point, most people may not have understood why, for this reason people have never even visited a dental office before due to fear of pain and many other reasons. When you visit a dentist, he or she will perform a checkup then clean your teeth if need be. During the checkup, the teeth doctor will look at the teeth, gums, tongue, throat, face, head and neck. These areas are interconnected so when one area is affected; there is likelihood that one of the other parts may be affected. That is why all the parts mentioned above are checked thoroughly.

When checking the teeth and gums, dentists typically look for cavities, plaque, or tartar on the teeth. Plague usually builds up on the teeth when you eat sugary foods and fail to brush. When plaque is left for long periods, it hardens and forms tartar. This is hard to remove just by brushing or flossing. It needs the help of a professional who will not only remove it but also guide you on ways to maintain the healthy teeth.

The gums area also checked for infections, since they darken when infected. The plaque on the teeth causes tooth cavities that affect the gums hence causing gum diseases. They also use a special tool to check the distance between the tooth and the gums.

If your teeth and gums are closely spaced, your gums are fine. However, if the space between the teeth is deep, it indicates there is an infection. This calls for the sheer responsibility of taking care of your teeth. Practice good oral hygiene by brushing for at least two minutes twice daily. You should also floss and use mouthwash to remove particles and plaque that your toothbrush cannot remove.

As earlier stated, Tartar cannot be removed from the home just by brushing. The dentists use a special tool to get rid of them through a process called scaling. They then polish your teeth using some gritty substance that effectively removes all stains of the teeth surface. At times, they floss your teeth to remove particles that may be stuck in between them.

After visiting a dentist, most people normally relax thinking that that process alone guarantees them strong teeth. Well, the process would proper oral hygiene would go a long way in keeping the teeth healthy and strong. Practicing oral hygiene should be a daily routine if you want to maintain string clean, healthy teeth.

Apart from brushing and flossing daily, be sure to eat healthy foods. Avoid sugary foods and if you have to eat them, ensure you brush to prevent bacteria from producing acid that corrodes the teeth. Be sure also to use toothpaste that is made using fluoride. Fluoride has bleaching properties that kills bacteria and leaves the teeth white.
